A tragedy of the worst sort...
The colors from the projected images reflected the room dimly. The world was out of focus, with a lack of corrective lenses, adding to the confusion of the setting. Where were the bands? Where was the uplifting music? Where were the people I knew? And why was everyone I saw over the age of 40? I could see heads turning, and I realized that I was silhouetted in the doorway. I moved to a corner of the room, and tried to establish what was happening. There was cake, and there were tables covered with elegant white tablecloths. It seemed remarkably similar to a wedding reception, but the lack of a large white dress put that notion out of my mind. In any case, it clearly was not Living Worship. I saw the green shirt, and hope crept back into my mind...who else would wear a green shirt in a formal setting? There were whispers among the tables, and he turned around, and saw me standing there. I tried to look casual.
"What are you doing here?"
This was like a nightmare...I checked that I was wearing my pants.
"Uhm...isn't this supposed to be Living Worship?"
He looked at me in that trying-to-mask-confusion way.
"No....that's somewhere else...this is my parent's anniversary dinner."
I remembered, now...I felt the blood tingling in my cheeks. I was glad it was dark.
"That's weird...Uhm...is there a phone around?"
I phoned home. My parents said half-an-hour. I sat beside him, and sang some songs...until game time. The lights were up, and I was clearly underdressed, with a hoodie and jeans. In the end, however, the game was slightly enjoyable, and it helped me relax slightly, discovering that I actually knew half of the peoplethere. And there was cake...lemon raspberry, which was absolutely delicious. I think, in baked goods, lemon and raspberry are my two favourite flavors. His cousin's were fun to be around, and it was good times from there...my parents came an hour later...
